Finding the perfect name for
your baby can be tricky!

For some people deciding a name for their baby is the easiest thing, as for others it is one of the most difficult decisions. The decision is however one of the most important ones that you will make for your child, so do not choose lightly.

When we were expecting our child, deciding on a girl's name was really easy (Maya), but we could not agree on a name if we would get a boy. Luckily we got a girl! We wanted a short first name and a longer middle name (Alexandra). It was important to us that the name was easy to pronounce all over the world, and that it would be easy to spell.

There are many things to consider when you are deciding on a name. As an expectant couple you will receive lots of suggestions from relatives, co-workers, neighbors and so on, but please do remember that ultimately the decision is yours! What is most important is that you like the name. Begin to discuss names with your partner as early on as possible.

Try to set some guidelines and then a good hint is to make a list of all your favorite names. Perhaps you may want to wait with deciding upon a name until the baby is born. Therefor it is good to have several names to choose from and to see what name goes with the personality of the baby.

Some factors or points that might help you in your discussions/decisions:

•  Do we want to have a trendy/popular name? Will the name still be trendy when our baby is a grown-up? When our child begins school, how many other kids will there be in the class with the same name?

•  Do we want to name our daughter/son after someone? It can be after a relative or just as well a character in a book or a film.

•  Are we looking for an uncommon/unique name? Is the name too unique? Can people pronounce it and spell it? Will the name make our son or daughter feel special in a positive or negative way?

•  Do we want a name that reflects on the child's origin? In your family, how important is your religious and cultural heritage when deciding on a name?

•  How does the name sound when it is said aloud? Does it go well with the middle name and last name? Does it have the right number of syllables?

•  How important is the meaning of the name? It can be good to choose a name with a positive meaning since at times the name might be associated with the child as a person.
